The popular Canadian National Miniature Horse Show is back and better than ever at Calgary Stampede 2019!

Guests to Stampede Park can see their favourite mini-horse classes on the final weekend of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, with events beginning on Friday, July 12 and continuing daily through to Sunday, July 14.

The 2019 Northern Lights Arena is staying BIG, a whopping 127'x200', plenty of room to see the very best beautiful miniature horses in action as they compete in a wide array of classes including halter, liberty, driving, jumping and obstacle competitions.

Entry Fees

All entries must be completed online and submitted through our online system. Entries will NOT be accepted over the phone, by email or by fax. If you require assistance with online entries please contact our entries office at 403-261-0336 or agriculture@calgarystampede.com and we will be happy to assist you! 

**Please upload completed Accreditation, Parking & RV Forms with your entry. Be sure to purchase the corresponding number of passes you require when you enter online.

  • Entries open April 15, 2019
  • Horse entries close June 3, 2019
  • Class additions (offered only for horses that are entered by June 3) will be accepted until June 24, 2019, 4 p.m. Class additions made between June 4 – June 24 will be charged an entry fee of $60 per class.
  • If a competitor requests class changes due to an error made while entering, that is considered a scratch and a new class addition charge of $60 will be applied.
  • ** NO post-entries
  • ** NO substitutions will be accepted after June 3rd, unless a certified vet or doctor's note is provided.

 

Entry Fees:

  • $30 per entry, per class (covers two shows)
  • AMHA fee of $5.50 per horse.
  • FREE YOUTH SHOWMANSHIP & COSTUME CLASSES - There is no entry fee or prize money for these classes, however ribbons will be presented to all participants. 
  • *Please refer to the Calgary Stampede Horse Show Committee Costume Class Guidelines
  • FREE YOUTH MUSICAL CHAIRS CLASS - There is no entry fee or prize money. Ribbons will be awarded to all participants.
  • Pewter buckles will not be awarded per horse entered.  They are available to purchase for $45 each. Please indicate on your entry form if you wish to purchase any pewter buckles, including quantity and submit payment along with completed entry forms.

Please Note:  Height classes may be combined at the sole discretion of the show committee show should there be fewer than three entries in a class. Height classes may also be combined due to time restrictions. Exhibitors will be notified in advance if classes are combined. The show committee will make every effort to notify exhibitors in this instance within two weeks after the close of entries.

CLASS WINNERS under each judge will be awarded ribbons to sixth place.


GRAND & RESERVE CHAMPIONS under each judge will receive a trophy buckle and ribbon.


THE CANADIAN NATIONAL SUPREME HALTER CHAMPION of the show will receive a Supreme Champion buckle and custom-made flowered neck sash.


CANADIAN NATIONAL GRAND & RESERVE CHAMPIONS will receive a neck sash for Reserve and custom-made flowered neck sash for Grand Champions.

HIGH POINT INDIVIDUAL GO HORSE will receive a custom-made flowered neck sash.


LORD STERLING CUP winner will receive a flowered neck sash and keeper trophy.


JIM RODGERS TROPHY will be awarded to the most sportsman-like youth exhibitor.
 

NEW AWARDS!!! HIGH POINT BUCKLES will be awarded to the High Point Amateur, Youth 7 & Under, Youth 8-12 and Youth 13-18.

 

The determination of Canadian National Champions and high point awards will be made by an accumulation of points earned from both judges in their respective divisions. In the event of a tie, the placings of the call judge will take priority. Canadian National Champions will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Junior Halter Mares, Senior Halter Mares
  • Junior Halter Stallions, Senior Halter Stallions
  • Junior Halter Geldings, Senior Halter Geldings
  • Stock Horse, Single Pleasure Driving Horse, Roadster Driving Horse, Country Pleasure Driving Horse, Classic Pleasure Driving, Supreme Halter Horse
     

* Canadian National Halter Champions (Junior and Senior Champion Mares, Junior and Senior Champion Stallions, Junior and Senior Champion Geldings) will compete for the title of Canadian National Supreme Halter Horse.

INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITORS/COMPETITOR INFORMATION

Anyone entering Canada must have a valid Passport.

Non-residents of Canada will be subject to a 15% withholding tax on all prize monies awarded as required by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Non-residents of Canada may apply to the CRA to have the 15% withholding tax returned.  To file a claim with the CRA, complete and submit the following information:

Rules:

MISSION STATEMENT The Calgary Stampede and the Miniature Horse Show Committee are committed to planning and delivering the annual Miniature Horse Show to a standard worthy of Canadian National Status, while simultaneously ensuring that administration of the show is efficient and effective. To achieve the foregoing objective, reliance is placed upon Calgary Stampede policies and guidelines as well as AMHA rules. Accordingly, exhibitors/participants must familiarize themselves with the governing policies, guidelines and rules. It is an expectation that all exhibitors/participants will comply with entry deadlines, move in and release requirements, shot box requirements and be on time for the pre-show measuring of horses. It goes without saying that all persons, in any way involved with the Miniature Horse Show, are expected to at all times, conduct themselves in a courteous manner.

  1. Special attention is called to the following:
  2. A combined point score based on the placings of each judge will determine the Canadian National Champion. In the event of a tie, the call judge will make the final decision.
  3. Exhibitors are responsible for carrying their own liability insurance, (see Liability - General Rules).
  4. Exhibitors must ascertain at what time judging will take place; and no complaint or appeal based upon the statement that the judges have overlooked the exhibits will be considered by the Calgary Stampede.
  5. Due to limited show time, there will be no gate holds.
  6. It is compulsory for exhibitors to wear the official show numbers supplied by the Calgary Stampede.
  7. Miniature Horse exhibitors who do not adhere to the Miniature Horse release time will automatically forfeit their prize money and may result in corrective action such as refusal of entry, suspension, or other action as may be deemed appropriate.
  8. Exhibitors canceling their entries shall forfeit their entry fee except when a certificate of disability is issued by a qualified veterinarian. The certificate of disability must be received by the Agriculture Entries Office by Monday, July 8, 2019 in order to receive an entry fee refund.
  9. General show rules are governed by the AMHA. For specific rules and ring procedures, please refer to the 2019 Official Show Rules of the American Miniature Horse Association.
  10. All AMHA shows are open to any AMHA registered horses whose exhibitor is able to prove valid registration. To enter an AMHA approved show, the exhibitor must use the complete name and number of the animal as it is shown on the horse's registration certificate. Entry forms must be completely filled out and will not be accepted by the show management until all information has been listed, copies of both sides of the registration paper received, all fees paid and the entry form signed by the exhibitor.
  11. Stallions over the age of 3 must also provide a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection with their entry. These forms are available on the AMHA website.
  12. Horses may be shown if the exhibitor furnishes proof that the registration application is pending in the AMHA office prior to the show. The Show Chairman shall accept as proof only a signed statement from the AMHA office or oral verification from the AMHA office to the Show Chairman that registration is pending.
  13. A 2019 amateur number must be purchased from the AMHA and is required where applicable and must be listed on the entry form. In order to show in an amateur class, the horse must be owned or leased by the amateur individually or jointly, the amateur's family, or solely owned corporation, ranch or farm. AMHA amateur applications will be available for purchase at the show office. All amateur exhibitors must provide the relationship to the owner.
  14. AOTE Amateur Owned Trained and Exhibited classes will be offered in 2019. The horse exhibited AOTE must be trained, conditioned, groomed and shown by the AOTE or a non professional family member in all divisions entered. A designated AOTE horse must show under the AOTE guidelines one calendar year starting on January 1, regardless of the class entered. Failure to abide by the AOTE rules once AOTE horse has begun showing will result in penalties. For complete AOTE rules, refer to the 2019 AMHA Show Rules.
  15. No miniature horse shall exceed 34 inches in height at the withers. Weanlings must not exceed 30 inches. Yearlings must not exceed 32 inches. Two year olds must not exceed 33 inches. All horses must meet the height qualification for each class and will be measured at the base of the last hairs of the main.
  16. The age of the horse is determined from January 1st of the year in which they were foaled.
  17. Conduct by an exhibitor, trainer, owner, or immediate family member of an unsportsmanlike, abusive or detrimental nature will not be tolerated by the show management, including but not limited to threatening or intimidating conduct, physical, verbal or written toward any show official. Any person(s) guilty of such conduct should be reported immediately to show management by the judge, steward, or show committee member. The show management will suspend the offender for the duration of the show.
  18. Protests:
    • Any protest must be made in writing to the show manager, (Tammy Botsford), or the ring steward no later than one hour after the completion of the last class of the show. The protest shall be accompanied by a $100 deposit, which shall only be returned to the protestor in the event the protest is sustained. Please refer to the current AMHA Show Rules for a complete list of protest regulations.
    • Exhibitors may not protest to the judge directly or by interference, on the placing of any horse. Any person guilty of such conduct will be excused from the show and forfeit any premiums received at that show, and the right to show in any additional classes at the show. No entry fees will be returned.
  19. Horses eligible and entered must show unless excused by the manager or judge.
  20. Harness Championships are limited to first and second place winners from classes in that division. Any horse competing is eligible to be Grand or Reserve Champion. In the event that one horse qualifies with different drivers, the exhibitor must decide which driver will show the entry in the championship class.
  21. Liberty Class: Horses will be judged beginning when the halter is removed until caught by the exhibitor. Time of liberty shall be 1.5 minutes; time to catch shall be maximum 1.5 minutes or will result in disqualification. Music is required and a labelled cd must be handed in when the horse is measured. All liberty horses must be at least one (1) year old.  
  22. There will be no cross entries between any Classic, Country, or Single Pleasure Driving classes.
  23. LORD STERLING CUP - Open to teams of two Miniature Horses with a four wheeled vehicle. Points are accumulated over both shows. The presentation of the Lord Sterling Cup will take place during the Miniature Horse Show. In case of a tie on total points, a call judge will make the final decision. The purpose of this class is to demonstrate the general utility of the Miniature as a driving horse simulating work conditions. Prize money and The Lord Sterling Cup will be awarded to the hitch accumulating the most points over both shows. Description - Hitches to enter the ring at a working trot. At the direction of the Ring Steward, hitches shall then be exhibited at a flat footed walk and a working trot in both directions of the ring. Upon completion of the required rail work, hitches will then be required to work individually through the following pattern: back to dock, swing left and right, and drive a figure eight. Points will be awarded as follow: Rail work - 50 points; Performance - 40 points; Turnout - 10 points. An appropriately attired header is required for each hitch. Headers may enter the ring when called or may ride on the wagon, but headers must take no action that will affect the performance of any horses in the ring.  Headers must be a capable person of 13 years of age or older; for youth drivers, headers must be an adult, 19 years of age or older. Headers will enter the ring, or dismount when the hitch is halted on the rail or in line up.  The header will remain at least 2 paces distant from the heads of the team when the judge is inspecting the horses. While the horses are at the dock, the header will stand nearby in order to assist when requested by the driver.
  24. Calgary Stampede Canadian National Miniature Horse Show Carriage Driving Division Explanations.
  25. Amateur and Youth are required to submit a copy of their current card with horse show entries.
  26. If there are 3 or less horses entered in a class at the close of class registrations on June 24th, classes may be combined or cancelled. 
  27. In any non-rated class, should any questions, concerns, disputes, discrepancies or tabulation errors arise or be identified at any time after placings, titles and/or awards are announced and/or distributed (including but not limited to Canadian National Grand and Reserve Champion placings, titles and awards), placings, titles and/or awards may be adjusted and re-distributed and any such adjustment or redistribution will be at the sole discretion of the Calgary Stampede Miniature Horse Committee. Any such situation that occurs will be evaluated by the Committee on an individual basis. As a condition of entry into a non-rated class and/or allowing one's horse to be considered for a non-rated placing, title or award, Exhibitors agree to these terms and agree to honour and abide by Committee decisions.

 

**REMINDER TO EXHIBITORS FOR 2019: STRUCTURES AND EXHIBIT BOOTH REQUIREMENTS

  1. Decorative material, such as, but not limited to, drapes, theatre curtains, signs, banners, acoustical material, hay/straw, split bamboo, plastic cloth, plastic displays, canvas, cardboard, etc. shall be of non-flammable material, shall conform to CAN/ULC1-S109, “Flame Tests of Flame-Resistant Fabrics and Films”, or shall be treated and maintained in a flame retardant condition by means of a flame retardant solution to ensure that the material will pass the match flame test in NFPA2 705, “Field Flame Test for Textiles and Films.” Plastic cloth and certain other plastic materials, tar-paper, nylon, oilcloth, etc. cannot be rendered flame retardant and are prohibited. Any decorative material may be subject to testing. Materials in violation shall be immediately removed from the building.
  2. Combustible materials that are 10mm (3/8 inch) or more in thickness or glass may be used without flame retardant treatment. Exception: Paper, cardboard or foam products.

STAMPEDE ENTRY

An official accreditation pass will be needed by all those granted Park access for this Stampede and all future Stampedes.

In addition to granting access to Stampede Park, the photo accreditation will indicate which restricted areas each person can enter based on individual requirements. Accreditation is year specific, and a new pass will be issued each year. The Agriculture Accreditation pass gives you access to the Grandstand Rush areas for the Rodeo, Chuckwagons, and Evening Show.  The pass must be purchased on the entry application for a fee of $35.00 (G.S.T. included) each. These badges are a privilege of the exhibitors, and will be limited. Exhibitors are responsible for lost or forgotten badges.

Entry to Stampede Park is via the Nat Christie Gate off of 25th Ave SE.  Please follow the directions of the parking staff.
All Heavy Horse Pull stalling will be in the Agriculture Barns. Competitors with trailers will be directed on where to park upon arrival.
