Talk about four-legged focus! The annual World Stock Dog Championship is one of the most compelling events of the Calgary Stampede with these startlingly agile and intelligent dogs moving three sheep through a challenging course and into a pen in less than four minutes.

This event is sanctioned by the United States Border Collie Handlers Association and the Alberta Stock Dog Association. The competition will start with 60 entries, but only the top 12 will advance to the championship final round on Wednesday, July 11th  at 3:30 p.m. in the Nutrien Western Events Centre.

It’s doggone challenging — and fun!

We will accept 60 dogs into the competition. Handlers are eligible to enter two dogs. In the event that our competition roster is not full under the 'two dogs per handler' rule, we will accept a third entry from handlers who wish to do so, and a draw will be made from this pool to make up the shortfall. If you wish to enter a third dog, please indicate it on your entry form but do not include the associated entry fee for the dog. Our Entries Office will contact you for payment, should the occasion arise.

**New – Entries process for the Calgary Stampede World Stock Dog Championship.  Please note that entries are NO LONGER time stamped and entries will NOT be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.  All positions will be filled by the below process.

Handlers names will be drawn and corresponding number of dogs for that handler will be provided a spot(s) (up to 2 dogs) until 60 spots are filled.  Remaining entries will be drawn to create a waitlist of potential competitors if a spot is to open up.

In the instance a handler with 2 dogs is drawn, though there is only 1 spot remaining available, the handler will have the option to forfeit the entry with no penalty, OR have one (1) confirmed dog and the second dog will be first on waitlist.

Only confirmed entries will be charged.

The completed entry form must be in the Agriculture Entries Office between 9:00 a.m., April 27, 2018 and 4:00 p.m., May 4, 2018. Entries not complying with the requirements will be rejected. All entry fees will be allocated to prize money - GST not applicable.

Entries will be accepted by mail, e-mail, online, or facsimile. Entries received via e-mail or facsimile require credit card information. Only one handler's entries per fax or e-mail will be accepted. Dog substitutions will be allowed until the start of the 1st Go Round.

Written notice of withdrawal from competition must be received by the Agriculture Entries office by Monday, May 28, 2018 to be considered without penalty. Exhibitors canceling their entries after May 28, 2018 shall forfeit their entry fee.

** Please note that online entries will be available.  You may create your account by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page, however, entries for the World Stock Dog Championship will not be available until April 27, 2018.

Rules

Rules:

1. Special attention is called to the following:

The rules and conditions will be strictly enforced by the Calgary Stampede Sheep Committee.
2. A maximum of sixty (60) dogs will run in the First and Second Go Rounds. The top twelve (12) aggregate score dogs will advance to the finals.
3. Each go round will be considered a separate trial for the purpose of awarding USBCHA and ASDA points. Points will not be awarded for the finals.
4. Cumulative scores for first and second go rounds will determine the top twelve (12) finalists. The final is a sudden death with scores from the prior two go rounds being eliminated.
5. Order of running will be determined by drawing for position by the Calgary Stampede Sheep Committee prior to the trial.
6. The dog must be in the handler's circle prior to being sent; a 20 second penalty will be assessed if the dog is outside the circle when sent.
7. This is a timed arena trial. Timing will start when the dog is sent or the gate closes after the 3rd sheep has entered the arena, which ever occurs first.
8. Dogs may be directed by voice or whistle (handlers may carry a stockman's cane or shepherd's crook).
9. At least one sheep must complete each obstacle before proceeding on to the next obstacle. Retries are the handler's choice. If the handler decides to retry the obstacle, all of the sheep must be taken back to a point prior to the obstacle with the stopwatch running. Any previous points for that obstacle are forfeited.
10. Knocking over an obstacle will result in all points lost for that obstacle.
11. The handler must remain in the handler's circle until the last sheep exits the chute. Failure to do so will result in a 20 second penalty per occurance.
12. Once the rope on the gate has been taken up by the handler it cannot be intentionally released until the sheep are penned. Releasing the rope to gain an advantage will result in a disqualification.
13. At no time will a handler come in contact with the sheep except in the case where the sheep runs into the handler while blocking them. This includes contact with any part of the handler's body or any inanimate object. Contact with the sheep will result in a disqualification.
14. Gripping and/or biting will result in disqualification.
15. If two or more handlers are equal in time and points at pen time, the tie will be broken by chute times and points. In case of incomplete runs by all competitors, positions will be determined by chute times and points.
16. The judge can award a rerun at any time during the trial if circumstances warrant such action. In the case of a rerun, the judge will decide if the dog is to start from the beginning or a certain point of the run. If decided that the rerun shall start from another point other than the beginning, points up until the restart position will stand.
17. No dogs will be allowed on the trial course prior to their run.
18. Only competition dogs are allowed on Stampede Park.
19. Exhibitors must wear a western dress shirt.
20. Dogs must be clean and groomed.
21. Competitors are expected to be ready for their run when called. Handlers who fail to answer the call will be disqualified.
22. Any abuse of dogs or livestock seen by the Trial Directors or judge will result in the handler and all dogs entered under the handlers name being disqualified and all monies won by the handler will be forfeited.
23. At no time will a handler approach the judge. The judge's decision will be respected and considered final.
24. The trial Judge reserves the right to call off a dog at any time. Dog and handler will be excused if in the opinion of the judge there is excessive running or over working of the sheep.
25. If there is a discrepancy in the trial Judge's call, there will be a meeting of The Arena Director, the Trial Director, and the Trial Judg before a final decision is imparted.

26. The Calgary Stampede World Stock Dog Committee and Stampede Officials shall in their sole and unfettered discretion have the right at any time to add, delete, modify, waive or interpret a Rule or Rules in order to clarify or address a circumstance or action not previously outlined or contemplated in the existing World Stock Dog Rules or as Stampede Officials may deem appropriate for the betterment of the competition.

Judges

Judge: Christine Jobe - Cypress Country, Alberta

Bio: My name is Christine Jobe and I  live on a ranch near Medicine Hat, Alberta and run a successful dog training business - Canine Solutions Working Dogs. I raise and train my own dogs and  have competed all throughout Canada and the US. Highlights of my trialling includes placing 9th at the 2015 CBCA Finals, 11th at the 2014 USBCHA Finals, 8th at the Meeker Sheepdog Classic in 2005, Finalist of the World Stock Dog Championships in Calgary, and won Regina Agribition 2010. I have, over the years, hosted ten stock dog trials and in 2018 am hosting the CBCA Canadian Sheepdog Championships.  Border collies became an integral part of my life when I started ranching in 1994. I got my first border collie, ‘Tuck’, soon after and have since devoted a good share of my time to training, working, breeding and trailing them. In 1999, I entered my first sheepdog trial with a dog I trained myself and have had ‘trial fever’ ever since. I have made opportunities for myself to work with some of the best dog handlers in the world. My dogs and I have worked all over North America, including; − Gathering and trailing wild cattle, sheep and reindeer on two of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska − Managing 1800 ewes on the cut-blocks in northern BC − Working in Waterton Lakes National Park herding the mule deer out of the community − Hired to deter bighorn sheep from straying onto the CN tracks in Jasper National Park. − Deterred and controlled the geese populations at St. Eugene Golf and Country Club in Kimberly, BC  I am committed to the Border Collie breed and to maintaining the amazing workability of them.

Judging Criteria
