The 2019 Working Cow Horse Fence Spectacular at the Calgary Stampede will take place over two days.  Stampede visitors will be able to see equine athletes in action in this high-energy event Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12. 

Traditionally, the Calgary Stampede Working Cow Horse Classic consisted of two of the components: the reined work and the fence work. This year the Calgary Stampede will be showcasing a Cow Horse Fence Spectacular. The best cow horse riders in Canada will be invited to showcase their talent center stage, going down the fence in the Nutrien Western Event Centre!!!

This is an invitation-only event. It is the Calgary Stampede’s goal to present “the best of the best” to its competitions. As such, invitations will be sent out to the Top 30 riders as follows:

  • Top five finalists (riders) in the 2018 Calgary
  • Stampede Working Cow Horse Classic (Open Bridle, Open Hackamore, Non Pro Bridle)
  • Top rider rankings from 2018 ARCHA final points in Open Bridle, Open Hackamore/Snaffle Bit, Open Two-Rein, Non Pro Bridle, Non Pro Snaffle Bit/Hackamore, Non Pro Two-Rein (minimum 2 judges/10 points)
  • Top 10 finishers at the 2019 Celebrations of Champions
  • Riders may enter a maximum of two horses.

At its discretion, the Calgary Stampede may invite “wild card” riders to compete in the Cow Horse Fence Spectacular.

A maximum of 60 entries (including Wild Cards) will be accepted in total for the Open Bridle, Open Hackamore, and Non Pro Fence Spectacular classes. A minimum class size of 9 must be attained in order for the class to run during the 2019 Calgary Stampede

INVITATIONS WILL BE SENT OUT BY CANADA POST AND BY EMAIL NO LATER THAN APRIL 5, 2019. Additional invitations may be sent out as entries permit. The entry period is April 15-29. The link to the entry form will be in the invitation letter.

Non-Pros must abide by NRCHA ownership rules as stipulated in NRCHA rules 2.1.10 through 2.1.16.  The Western Performance Horse Committee reserves the right to resolve issues not covered by the rules.

All competition times are tentative and subject to change; any changes will be posted to the website.

Non Pro Bridle: $5,000 Added Money

Invited riders may enter a maximum of two horses.

Entry fee is $550 per entry that includes:

Cattle charge of $120
Office charge of $130
Total add-back is $300

Non Pros must attach to their entry, legal documents to prove ownership such as a copy of the bill of sale, or the registration papers for their horse as defined in NRCHA rule 2.1.16. Horses must be shown in an unbroken bar mouthpiece per NRCHA RUle 5.2.1.  

The Non-Pro Bridle Fence Spectacular will consist of two runs: a preliminary round on Thursday, July 11 and a clean-slate Final on Friday, July 12.  50% (including ties) of the competitors in the preliminary round will be invited to the Finals (minimum 5 riders; maximum 15 riders). Entries receiving a 0 (zero) or No Score will not be eligible to return to the Finals.

It is the responsibility of the Non Pro competitor to ensure that their entries comply with the NRCHA ownership/leasing rules

 

Open Hackamore: $10,000 Added money

Invited riders may enter a maximum of two horses.

Entry fee is $700 per entry that includes:

Cattle charge of $120
Office charge of $130
Total add-back is $450

The Open Hackamore Fence Spectacular will consist of two runs: a preliminary round on Thursday, July 11 and a clean-slate Final on Friday, July 12.  50% (including ties) of the competitors in the preliminary round will be invited to the Finals (minimum 5 riders; maximum 15 riders).  Entries receiving a 0 (zero) or No Score will not be eligible to return to the Finals.

 

Open Bridle: $10,000 Added money

The Open Bridle Fence Spectacular will consist of two runs: a preliminary round on Thursday, July 11 and a clean-slate Final on Friday, July 12.  50% (including ties) of the competitors in the preliminary round will be invited to the Finals (minimum 5 riders; maximum 15 riders). Entries receiving a 0 (zero) or No Score will not be eligible to return to the Finals. Horses must be shown in an unbrokem bar mouthpiece per NRCHA Rule 5.2.1.

All entries must be completed online. No entries will be accepted by phone, fax or email. A link to the online system is included on the invitation letter. The completed entry form must be submitted through the online entry system by the listed date.  Entries not complying with the requirements will be rejected.  

 

DRAW ORDER

The draw will be held and posted on June 24, 2019.

Awards

AWARDS

Total added money is $25,000:

  • Open Bridle: $10,000 added money plus $450 add-back per entry
  • Open Hackamore: $10,000 added money plus $450 add-back per entry
  • Non Pro Bridle: $5,000 added money plus $300 add-back per entry

 

1st and 2nd place finishers in each class of the preliminaries will receive day money in the amounts of $300 (1st) and $200 (2nd).

In addition to cash, the Champions and Reserve Champions in the Non Pro Bridle, Open Hackamore, and Open Bridle Fence Spectacular classes will receive trophy buckles. Champions in all three classes will also receive a Calgary Stampede Bronze. The score in the clean-slate Final determines final payout and awards.  

Payout in the finals will be made as below:

1st – 30%

2nd – 25%

3rd – 20%

4th – 15%

5th – 10%

In the event of a tie for Champion, the Champion and award recipient will be determined by either a ride off or coin toss at the discretion of the competitors. Prize money will be split. In the event of a tie for Reserve Champion, the Reserve Champion and award recipient will be decided on by a coin toss. Prize money will be split.

 

INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITORS/COMPETITOR INFORMATION

Anyone entering Canada must have a valid Passport.

Non-residents of Canada will be subject to a 15% withholding tax on all prize monies awarded as required by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Non-residents of Canada may apply to the CRA to have the 15% withholding tax returned.  To file a claim with the CRA, complete and submit the following information:

  1. Special attention is called to the following:
    -     General Rules
    - Health Regulations
    - IAFE code of ethics
    - Animal Care Codes of Practice
  2. Order of the round will be decided by draw on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. (noon).  All riders are bound by the order of the draw. Failure to compete in the order drawn will result in forfeiture of all prize money and fees.
  3. The competition will consist of a preliminary round and a final. While this is not an approved NRCHA event, the Cow Horse Fence Spectacular will be judged using NRCHA rules for fence work.
  1. Awards will be presented at the end of each class on Friday, July 12, 2019.  All prize monies will be mailed to the owner of the horse(s) or rider (as indicated on the entry form) entered in Canadian Funds. Non-residents of Canada will be subject to a 15% withholding tax on all prize monies awarded as required by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Non-residents of Canada may apply to the CRA to have the 15% withholding tax returned.
  2. Competitors are requested to travel together as much as possible to reduce the number of trailers/parking. Each invited rider will receive ONE parking pass.
  3. The Horse, Rider and Owner must be declared at the time of entry.   NRCHA rules for Non Pro horse ownership/leasing will be in effect.  This competition is open to horses of any breed registry and non-registered/grade horses.
  4. Competitor accreditation will be available for pick up upon arrival on July 11, 2019 at the Nat Christie Gate entrance off 25 Ave SE to the show grounds.  For alternative pick-up or delivery arrangements please call (403) 261-0162.
  5. There will be a zero tolerance of any inhumane treatment of horses or cattle while in the show arena or on the show grounds.  Any such action will be cause for disqualification.  Inhumane treatment includes, but is not limited to, excessive jerking, pulling, kicking, slapping or whipping.
  6. All complaints and protests will be handled in compliance with the NRCHA rule 14.3.
  7. Horse substitutions or scratches will be allowed for the following reasons only otherwise all fees will be forfeited. Scratches occurring BEFORE the draw is made will be refunded their entire entry fee. Horse substitutions or scratches will be allowed for the following reasons only otherwise all fees will be forfeited. Scratches occurring AFTER the draw is made will forfeit the office and cattle fees portion of the entry fee.
    1. In case of a disabling injury to the horse, the contestant must furnish a certificate from a qualified Veterinarian declaring the horse disabled and unable to compete.  Such certificate must be in the hands of the Show Management prior to the start of the contest.
    2. In the case of a disabling injury to the rider, or serious sickness or death in his/her family, Show Management must be advised in writing prior to the start of the contest.
    3. THERE WILL BE NO RIDER SUBSTITUTIONS PERMITTED.
  1.  The decision of the Western Performance Horse Committee is final.
  2.  Non Pro riders must comply with the NRCHA ownership rules 2.1.10 through 2.1.16 and submit with their entry, legal documents to prove ownership of their horse in accordance with the NRCHA definition of “Non Pro”.
  3. All riders and helpers must follow the Infield Parking rules, as well as rules in effect for Track Crossing.
  4.  **Please note there will be NO unauthorized persons allowed in the Hitching Ring or Warm Up Arena.  Exhibitor Badges must be visible at all times, no exceptions will be made. **
  5. No outside alcohol will be permitted on Stampede Park.

While this is not an approved NRCHA event, the Cow Horse Fence Spectacular will be judged using NRCHA rules for fence work.

GENERAL

Stampede Park Arrival Information
Entry to Stampede Park is through the Nat Christie Gate off 25th Avenue SE.  Once you enter the gates you will be directed to the accreditation trailer to pick up your exhibitor package. Your Exhibitor Package will include all of your accreditation passes as well as your parking pass. Competitors will be parked in the Infield Parking Lot. Due to limited space please travel together as much as possible. 

 

Parking Information
Daily parking passes for the Calgary Stampede Infield Lot will be provided to competitors (one per Rider).  Please note there is no overnight parking or stalling on Stampede Park.  Competitors are asked not to arrive any more than three hours before the posted event start time. You must vacate the parking area within 60 minutes of the end of the event.

 

Stampede Entry
An official photo accreditation badge will be required by all competitors to access Stampede Park for the 2019 Calgary Stampede.  A new accreditation must be issued each year.  In addition to granting you access to Stampede Park, the Agriculture Accreditation badge gives you access to the Grandstand Rush areas for the Rodeo, Chuckwagons, and Evening Show.  The badge must be purchased on the entry form for a fee of $35.00 (G.S.T. included). These badges are a privilege of the exhibitors, and will be limited. Exhibitors are responsible for lost or forgotten badges.

COMMITTEE

The Western Performance Horse Committee conducts the Cow Horse Fence Spectacular Competition.
