The 2018 Working Cow Horse competition at the Calgary Stampede will take place over two days, expanding from the previous single day of action last year.  Stampede visitors will be able to see equine instincts in action in this high-energy event Thursday, July 12 and Friday, July 13.

 **All classes will be held in the Nutrien Western Events Centre on Stampede Park**

 The competition will consist of a preliminary round and finals.  Competitors in the preliminary round of Open Hackamore, Open Bridle and Non Pro Bridle will proceed to the finals in accordance to the NRCHA rule 7.3.4.  This rule states that the number of horses that proceed to the finals is determined by the number of places that will be paid according to the payout schedule in section 7.2.  Awards will be calculated on a two round aggregate in the finals Friday, July 13, 2018.

This competition will be run under National Reined Cow Horse Association Rules.  All exhibitors and owners must be members of the NRCHA.  Any entry received without a NRCHA membership number will be rejected.  Non-Pros must abide by NRCHA ownership rules as stipulated in NRCHA rules 2.1.10 through 2.1.16.  The Western Performance Horse Committee reserves the right to resolve issues not covered by the rules.

All competition times are tentative and subject to change; any changes will be posted to the website.

Entry Fees

Non-Pro Bridle: $5,000 Added Money

Entry fee is $550 per entry which includes:

Cattle charge of $120
Office charge of $122
NRCHA fee $8 
Total add-back is $300

Non Pros must attach to their entry, legal documents to prove ownership such as a copy of the bill of sale, or the registration papers for their horse as defined in NRCHA rule 2.1.16. Horses must be shown in a full bridle.

The Non-Pro Bridle class will consist of a two run aggregate score format: a preliminary round on Thursday, July 12 and a final round on Friday, July 13.  As per NRCHA Rule 7.3.4 “the number of horses taken to the finals is determined by the number of places that will be paid according to the payout schedule in section 7.2 and based on the number of horses shown in the preliminaries”.

Open Bridle: $10,000 Added money

The Open Bridle class entry fee is $700 per entry which includes:

NRCHA fee $8 
Total add-back is $450

Open Hackamore: $10,000 Added Money

This class is open to horses 5 years of age and under (as of January 1, 2018) that have never been shown in a bridle or two-rein down the fence at any judged classes or events with the exception of horse sales. Proof of age of horse is required: registration papers or vet certificate required.  

The Non-Pro Bridle class will consist of a two run aggregate score format: a preliminary round on Thursday, July 12 and a final round on Friday, July 13.  As per NRCHA Rule 7.3.4 “the number of horses taken to the finals is determined by the number of places that will be paid according to the payout schedule in section 7.2 and based o the number of horses shown in the preliminaries”.

The completed entry form must be received in the Agriculture Entries Office by listed date.  Entries not complying with the requirements will be rejected.  ALL RIDERS AND OWNERS MUST BE CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE NRCHA AND SUBMIT A PHOTOCOPY OF THEIR NRCHA MEMBERSHIP CARD AT THE TIME OF ENTRY ALONG WITH THE HORSE’S REGISTRATION PAPERS Fax (403)410-4549.

It is the responsibility of the competitor to ensure that their entries comply with the NRCHA rules.  NRCHA Rule 1.17 “Any rider participating in a class or division in which he/she is not eligible (or the horse he/she is riding is not eligible) will be placed on probation for a minimum of 30 days for the first offense.  Second and subsequent offense will result in a 90-day suspension and a fine of $500.  When a horse/rider is found to be ineligible, the earnings and awards are forfeited to the NRCHA.”

Awards

Total added money is $25,000:

Open Bridle: $10,000 added money plus $450 add-back per entry

Open Hackamore: $10,000 added money plus $450 add-back per entry

Non-Pro Bridle: $5,000 added money plus $300 add-back per entry

 

In addition to cash, the Champions and Reserve Champions in the Non-Pro Bridle, Open Hackamore and Open Bridle classes will receive trophy buckles. The score in the aggregate over two days determines final payout and awards.  Payout will be made in accordance with the NRCHA rule 7.2.

In the event of a tie for Champion, the Champion and award recipient will be determined by either a ride off or coin toss at the discretion of the competitors.  Prize money will be split. In the event of a tie for Reserve Champion, the Reserve Champion and award recipient will be decided on by a coin toss. Prize money will be split.

  1. Special attention is called to the following:

  2. Order of the round will be decided by draw on Tuesday July 10, 2018 at 12:00 noon.  
  3. The competition will consist of two rounds.  
  4. Awards will be presented at the end of each class on Friday, July 13, 2018.  All prize monies will be mailed to the owner of the horses entered in Canadian Funds.
  5. Competitors are requested to travel together as much as possible to reduce the number of trailers/parking.
  6. The Horse, Rider and Owner must be declared at the time of entry.  Rider and Owner must be members of the NRCHA, NRCHA rules will be in effect.  This competition is open to horses of any breed registry and non-registered/grade horses.
  7. Competitor accreditation will be available for pick up upon arrival on July 12, 2018 at the Nat Christie Gate entrance off 25 Ave SE to the show grounds.  For alternative pick-up or delivery arrangements please call (403) 261-0162.
  8. There will be a zero tolerance of any inhumane treatment of horses or cattle while in the show arena or on the show grounds.  Any such action will be cause for disqualification.  Inhumane treatment includes, but is not limited to, excessive jerking, pulling, kicking, slapping or whipping.
  9. All complaints and protests will be handled in compliance with the NRCHA rule 14.3.
  10.  If an entry is cancelled, all fees will be forfeited.  Substitutions will be allowed for the following reasons only:
    1. In case of a disabling injury to the horse, the contestant must furnish a certificate from a qualified Veterinarian declaring the horse disabled and unable to compete.  Such certificate must be in the hands of the Show Management prior to the start of the contest.
    2.  10b. In the case of a disabling injury to the rider, or serious sickness or death in his/her family, Show Management must be advised in writing prior to the start of the contest.
  1.  The decision of the Western Performance Horse Committee is final.
  2.  Non Pro riders must comply with the NRCHA ownership rules 2.1.10 through 2.1.16 and submit with their entry, legal documents to prove ownership of their horse in accordance with the NRCHA definition of “Non Pro”.
  3.  **Please note there will be NO unauthorized persons allowed in the Hitching Ring or Warm Up Arena.  Exhibitor Badges must be visible at all times, no exceptions will be made. **
  4. No open alcohol will be permitted in the parking area.

General

Stampede Park Arrival Information
Entry to Stampede Park is through the Nat Christie Gate off 25th Avenue SE.  Once you enter the gates you will be directed to the accreditation trailer to pick up your exhibitor package. Your Exhibitor Package will include all of your accreditation passes as well as your parking pass. Competitors will be parked in the Infield Parking Lot. Due to limited space please travel together as much as possible. 

 

Parking Information
Daily parking passes for the Calgary Stampede Infield Lot will be provided to competitors (one per entry).  Please note there is no overnight parking or stalling on Stampede Park.  Competitors are asked not to arrive any more than three hours before the posted event start time. You must vacate the parking area prior to 7:00 p.m. each night. The infield lot will be cleared each night at 7:00 p.m. to prepare for the evening fireworks. 
 

Stampede Entry
An official photo accreditation badge will be required by all competitors to access Stampede Park for the 2018 Calgary Stampede.  A new accreditation must be issued each year.  In addition to granting you access to Stampede Park, the Agriculture Accreditation badge gives you access to the Grandstand Rush areas for the Rodeo, Chuckwagons, and Evening Show.  The badge must be purchased on the entry form for a fee of $35.00 (G.S.T. included). These badges are a privilege of the exhibitors, and will be limited. Exhibitors are responsible for lost or forgotten badges.
